Flight of the Phoenix

After shutting down an oil test well, run by Kelly (Miranda Otto) a plane piloted by Frank Towns (Denis Quaid) lands to pick up Kelly, her crew and their equipment. Kelly is not happy, being out of a job; Towns is unconcerned. They load up the plane with everyone, including one extra passenger, Elliott (Giovanni Ribisi). Kelly states that he just showed up one day and his plane never showed up. Um...sure. Anyway, Jared Padalecki (YAY!) or Davis, is unable to complete his good luck dance or whatever he was doing before getting on the plane and it runs into a storm and crashes. Right in the middle of the desert.

Now stranded, with little water, almost no food, and absolutely no patience with each other, oh and nomadic land pirates, they have no chance of survival. Until Elliott comes up with a plan. They can build a plane with the parts of the old plane. With nothing better to do they give it a shot. Against all odds they get along long enough to finish it. Only after do they realize that Elliott isn't a plane designer. Well not really. He designs model air planes. After convincing everyone that the mechanics are the same, and they really have no other option, they take off.

I liked the plot of this movie, but the characters themselves really bothered me.

What was up with Giovanni Ribisi's character? He really freaked me out. The way he coldheartedly shot that wounded guy in the head and how he calmly stated that he does more work on the plane therefore he deserves more water. Makes me shudder. What ever happened to 'one for all and all for one'? He told everyone that they were expendable and then makes them apologize to him for insulting his feelings? I don't think he has any to be honest and it was just a power play to show them how much they all rely on him. Still in my opinion it was really creepy.

And Denis Quaid's character? They crash and his plan is to wait to get rescued? What kind of plan is that? Worst captain ever is you ask my opinion. Well you didn't but you get my opinion anyways.

Why is it the only likable characters die? Why did Jared Padalecki and Tony Curran have to die and leave us with unlikable characters and another rap artist turned actor? Why?

Oh well, another DVD to add to the bargain bin.
