Dr. Strangelove

Or:

How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Bomb

During the Cold War, a crazy General, Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) decided to declare war on USSR by himself. So he sends a communication to the US Air Force, ordering them to attack according to Plan R. Once the government is aware of this fact they try and communicate with the plan, but they can't without the proper security code. Unfortunately Ripper has barricaded himself in his office and set his officers to guard the base.

Captain Mandrake (Peter Sellers) is trying to get Ripper to give him the code, while the President of the United States (Peter Sellers) and his men are in the War Room are trying to decide what to do. They call in the Russian Ambassador, Alexi de Sadesky (Peter Bull) and tell him what is going on. They call the leader of the USSR and discover that in the event of an attack the Russians have what is called a Doomsday Machine that will destroy the world.

While  General Buck Turgison (George C. Scott) is shouting about a Doomsday Machine Gap, Mandrake gets the code and they are able to call back all but one of the planes.  That plane drops its bomb and the Doomsday Machine is triggered. And the world is destroyed while Turgison is still arguing about a Mine Shaft Gap. The end.

I love this movie. It's awesome. Its a perfect satire of the American Government that makes you laugh while it makes you sad because things like this aren't that much of a stretch of the imagination.  The acting was incredible, the music was excellent, all the ironic and satiric images were incredible...the special effect were crappy, but you can't win them all.
